Finding Fulfilling Work

Today’s success story comes to us from Solar Evans, who just earned her book coach certification!

How did you come to book coaching?

I wanted to be an editor as a teenager, but unless I'd lived in New York, it was impossible. But with online remote work becoming more commonplace, I revisited this dream when I began to hate my job. When I learned about book coaching, I knew it was the perfect combination of editing and social contact.

What was your experience in the Book Coach Certification program? What did you find most satisfying and most challenging?

I spent the initial 20-30% of the course feeling wildly out of my depth to the point where I decided to skip all the exercises until I finished most of the coursework. Until then, I felt like I didn't know enough to complete them. It worked out well! Doing the exercises later helped me consolidate everything I'd learned and taken note on while I'd gone through it!

What is the most valuable piece of advice you’re taking away from the training?

I remember one lesson revolved around the language of giving feedback. Use less intense verbs for suggestions for improvement, but stronger ones for positive feedback. That made a lot of sense to me.

What did you do to celebrate this achievement?

I went out to my favorite restaurant that I hadn’t been to in over a year.

What are the next steps in your career? Tell us about your book coaching plans.

Administrative work. My website needs a bit more finagling, and I need to finalize my onboarding process and contracts. But in the next few weeks, I plan to start marketing in hopes of picking up my first few clients.

Tell us more about your coaching plans.

I plan to work with writers primarily at the revision stage! I love reading a full manuscript, making a book map, and drafting editorial letters to guide the writer in the right direction so that they can achieve their vision for their story. It's very fulfilling work.
