Earning Book Coach Certification

Congratulations to Christina Larocco, who just earned her Author Accelerator Book Coach Certification!

How did you come to book coaching?

I received my PhD in history and have been in academic editing for over a decade, and while I love this work, I missed being able to flex my creative muscles. As my own writing moved away from the formal and toward the personal (my first book-length creative nonfiction will be out next year), I grew more interested in working with authors in different genres and styles.

What was your experience in the Book Coach Certification program? What did you find most satisfying? How about most challenging?

I loved the certification program! I expected to receive rigorous book coach training, but I did not expect how fundamentally the materials would change me as a writer. I'm working through the Blueprint for a Memoir right now for my current project.

The most challenging part was finding practicum clients, but I'm so glad I waited for the right person.

What is the most valuable piece of advice you’re taking away from the training?

Nonfiction is about the reader's journey—where they start, where they end up, and how the book gets them there.

Tell us more about your book coaching plans.

I founded Since 1839 Coaching and Editing to honor Martha Schofield (1839–1916), the subject of one of my books. Through it, I coach nonfiction authors committed to preserving women’s legacies—memoirists, biographers, family historians, and others telling true stories that would otherwise be lost. If you have finished your research and/or raked over your memories but are still struggling to find your story, I will walk you through the processes of structuring and writing your book. Learn more and contact me to schedule a free 30-minute consultation at christinalarocco.com.

What did you do to celebrate earning your certification?

I made (and ate!) pumpkin oatmeal raisin cookies.

What are the next steps in your career?

I am actively building my client list. If you think we might be a good fit—or if you know someone whom you think would benefit from my help—please feel free to reach out.

Congratulations, Christina!
