Finding the Perfect Marriage of Your Skills

Today’s success story comes from Sam Cameron, who recently earned her book coach certification!

How did you come to book coaching?

As a full-time high school history teacher and part-time YA writer, I was looking for a career that would be more flexible and would also support my development as a writer. Coaching turned out to be the perfect marriage of my writing and teaching skills.

What did you do to celebrate earning your certification?

Called my mom and e-mailed all of my critique partners!

What was your experience in the Book Coach Certification program? What did you find most satisfying? What did you find most challenging?

I was completely (but pleasantly!) surprised by how dramatically the program improved the way I write and the way I teach the high school students in my history classes.

What is the most valuable piece of advice you’re taking away from the training?

All effective communication has a point! It doesn't matter if it is a novel, a history paper, or an e-mail. This is something I now know to look for, and ask my students or clients to look for any time they read or write.

Tell us more about your coaching plans.

My coaching business is under construction, but I hope to be ready to take on clients (YA speculative writers) by the end of summer. You can follow me on Twitter @sbcameron1 for updates!

What are the next steps in your career?

This summer I will be creating my website and launching my business. As of this fall, I will continue teaching high school part time so that I can focus more time and energy on coaching.
